I got REALLY into watercolors at the start of the pandemic and so have bought ALOT of the stuff here on amazon as well as thinking ALOT about creating the best possible system for storing and using my colors. Specifically thinking about tubes vs pans and pallet set ups for both desk painting and travel painting.I liked half pans for travel, but didn’t use them for studio work because they were so small. The problem with half pans is that as they get used up, you have to stick your brush in and swirl at a more and more perpendicular angle, damaging the brush. Also if you want to fill them, it takes them a LONG time to dry if you fill them to the top and you are committing a lot of pigment to that little pan. Basically I wanted half pans that let me fill and use basically just the top, which is what these are!I was worried about the small size but it’s not as big a deal as I thought. It comfortably fits a fluffy size 8 Princeton Neptune brush. You could even work in a 10 or twelve if you wanted though less comfortably. In those rare cases I’ll probably squeeze a bit onto a mixing pallet anyway.I like that it fits so many more colors in a small space. I’m already running up against the limit of my large 33 pan pallet. That pallet is already a bit big and uncomfortable to move across on the table. I like to conserve table space so it feels like everything is close to hand. This lets me do that.As much as I love obsessing over a million colors I frequently like to limit myself to a limited palette. Because these pans are removable, it’s easy for me to rearrange as I get new colors and to pick out just a few for a piece or to create a travel pallet.Which brings me to my last delight: I recently got a travel palette from art tool kit. (Not on Amazon) This is a super slim magnetic palette with little metal pans that I plan to take backpacking. The great thing is that I will be able to store a million colors and different sizes little metal pans in this palette box and then pick and arrange which I want to take backpacking without ever having to commit to a palette or fill multiple pans with the same color. So that is why this is such a great solution. Now why is it only 4 stars?:1) This is basically a cheap makeup kit casing. The plastic hinge is definitely going to break one day.2) The magnet isn’t super strong. I would not throw this one in my bag as a travel kit, dispute it’s size. The magnet doesn’t hold strong enough to be tossed around and there is just enough room in the lid that the pans can rattle around when they get loose.3) The mixing surface is not great. The paint beads up badly. I’d rough it up but it also looks like it’s already staining. I just place my mixing plate over the lid, which conveniently lays flat.
