This aluminum back plate is the perfect complement to my heavier stainless steel back plate! The steel plate is fantastic for winter diving when I’m wearing a 5 mm or 7 mm wetsuit and carrying 20–30 pounds of lead, but the added 6 pounds it contributes to my BC kit isn’t ideal for summer diving or travel. That’s where this aluminum back plate truly shines.I use the AL backplate in the summer with a 3 mm wetsuit or a Shorty, and it’s lightweight and travel-friendly without compromising durability. The craftsmanship is excellent—no sharp edges, and all the holes and slots are perfectly placed for mounting and adjustments. The black finish is a nice touch. At 1/8-inch (3.3 mm) thick, it’s robust enough for single-tank AL80 setupsI also purchased a second harness for this back plate, making it incredibly easy to swap my Dive Rite Voyager XT wing between the stainless steel and aluminum plates in about five minutes.
